Helsinki Design Week’s 10th anniversary!!!

Helsinki Design Week’s 10th anniversary kicks off tomorrow!

Founded in 2005 by Kari Korkman, Helsinki Design Week is the largest design festival in the Nordic countries. Held annually in September in Helsinki, the multidisciplinary festival presents over 150 design, architecture and fashion events from 100 event organizers. This year Helsinki Design Week celebrates its 10th anniversary. The festival will be held throughout Helsinki from 4-14.9.2014 with the theme Take the Leap.

“We are celebrating our anniversary year at a time at which many business areas facechallenges, but also are moving towards new opportunities. Our theme Take the Leap is a call to be bold and push forward. We are responding to our own challenge bycreating new kind of programme, by networking at home and abroad, and by expanding our activity to throughout the year,” declares Helsinki Design Week’s director Kari Korkman.

In its anniversary year, Helsinki Design Week is happy to present a strong programme of local and international events that demonstrate Helsinki’s role as a design city and continue the legacy of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

“The programme is even richer and more diverse than we had hoped to achieve,” says the director of the festival, Kari Korkman.

International visitors:Think in a Tank & Design Curating Now

Helsinki Design Week’s activities have attracted a number of international actors to bring their events to Helsinki and the festival presents numerous visiting speakers from all around the world. Among them is Think in a Tank, a seminar that gathers international lighting design and architectural professionals on 11 September to discuss the role of lighting in contemporary architecture.

"To me Helsinki offers the right mix of talent, vision and hospitality to enrich our research and inspire our guests. We look forward to being influenced and inspired by the progressive design spirit evident at HDW," says event organizer Tapio Rosenius, director of the Lighting Design Collective.

Helsinki Design Week is happy to be launching a new partnership with Design Museum Helsinki and Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in bringing top-notch international design debate to the programme. The festival will begin on 4 September with an international seminar Design Curating Now. The seminar shares insights on the latest developments within the field.

Programme throughout the city: new events and old favourites

This year, Helsinki Design Week’s main events are spread throughout Helsinki to cover new locations.

The Abattoir, known for its selection of local food is a first-timer in the Helsinki Design Week programme and one of the main venues of the festival. The HDW 10th anniversary exhibition, Local Design, will fill the Abattoir area with fresh Finnish design – locally designed and produced. In addition to the Local Design exhibition, the Abattoir will host a diverse daily programme with exhibitions and events ranging from fashion shows to seminars and movie nights to children’s workshops.

City design is a topic of several events. Also at the Abattoir, Helsinki Pecha Kucha introduces six takes on the topic of a better city on 8 September. On the same day, City Design Meet-Up brings together design entrepreneurs and city representatives in charge of procuring design services. Helsinki CityJam on 9 September is a service design workshop that focuses on the challenges of independent living faced by the elderly and the disabled.

Alongside the new programme offerings, favourites from earlier years are still included. The ever popular Design Market gathers design companies to sell their products at the Cable Factory on 6–7 September. The event expands to be bigger than previously with new sales spaces and an interesting programme. The Children’s Weekend, arranged for the second time on 13-14 September, brings design to the smallest members of the family.
